Beijing University of Chinese Medicine President, China's Ambassador to Iran Meet with TUMS Chancellor

TUMSPR News: Beijing University of Chinese Medicine president, professor Gao Si Hua, accompanying delegation and China's ambassador to Iran, met with TUMS president, professor Bagher Larijani for discussing the ways for prospective collaborations on January 21, 2011.
Dr. Gao Si Hua, the president for Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, China's ambassador to Iran, Mr. Yu Hongyang, accompanied by the dean of educational administration office, professor Zhai Shuang Qing, the board chairman of Dongzhimen Hospital, professor Li Pengtao, the deputy director of international cooperation department of the university, Dr.Tang Minke and the head of cultural section at China's embassy in Iran, Mr. Zhu Ziaho met with TUMS president, Dr. Bagher Larijani for discussing the ways for prospective collaborations on January 21, 2011.
Welcoming the guests, Dr. Larijani briefly introduced the University, its first rank in research for the 8th consecutive year among 42 medical universities in the country, responsibilities of similar universities which undertake education, research and health of people, something that differentiates Iranian medical universities with most similar universities worldwide.
On the newly established Traditional Medicine Faculty, TUMS chancellor said although the faculty has been established for four years, there are 7000 published books on the field as the country has a resourceful past history in this regard. He then added that medical school graduates could register for a Ph.D. degree in the faculty.
On the dynamicity of the University, chancellor Larijani explained that there were more than 100 projects for change in the educational system—changes that usually spread to the state's universities afterwards.
Dr. Gao Si Hua, the president of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, also introduced the university and expressed his pleasure for traveling to Iran and meeting TUMS chancellor and his colleagues. He then added that he has been familiar with Iranian culture and mentioned past trade and cultural relationship between the two countries where the Silk Road could symbolize this relationship. President Gao then introduce the university in detail and hinted at the collaborative work it has with British, Canadian, Singaporean and US universities.
He later hoped the meeting could open ways for better understanding of each others resources and lead to agreements for collaboration.
Dr. Shams-Ardekani, the dean of TUMS Traditional Medicine Faculty, also welcomed the guests and referred to China and Iran as two ancient civilizations and hoped by the help of the two Iranian and Chinese ambassadors a new era of mutual relationship would commence. He then said that nowadays, traditional medicine even the developed countries is greatly welcomed and Iranian traditional medicine and Chinese medicine which are the only complementary medicine schools with holistic approaches could play an important role in the treatment of disease in the world and could complete each other too.
Dr. Li Pengtao, the chairman of Dongzhimen Hospital, also took the turn to express his feelings about the meeting and said "I have the honor to meet with the chancellor of Tehran University [of Medical Sciences] and as Dr. Shams said Iranian traditional medicine and that of China have a long history and Tibetan medicine is an entity borrowing from the both [schools] and [in short] these two have a lot in common in theoretical point of view.
Dr. Pentago later talked about a city in China named Shenci where a document has been found which belongs to 1300 years ago indicating the role of a Persian physician who had introduced a medication there named "Djousha". He set Saffron as another example which has been imported to Tibetan medicine and then to Chinese medicine. He then said Chinese medicine is [an] important [branch of science] and Chinese culture is too and more important is the way the government supports it to let it grow.
Dr. Pentago said the University was collaborating with a research center under NIH which help treat nausea after chemotherapy by the help of Chinese medicine and said research of this type could be other ways for mutual collaboration between Iran and China.
