University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP) Ranks TUMS Second in Iran, 526 in the World
Date: 1/29/2011
TUMSPR News: The latest release by the newly established University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP) laboratory has ranked Tehran University of Medical Sciences second in Iran and 526 in the world but the real position may be far better due to the recent integration of Iran University of Medical Sciences (IUMS) into TUMS.
Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP) which was established in 2009, has released its latest ranking of 2000 top world universities from 110 different countries.
Regarding Iranian universities, URAP has ranked University of Tehran first in Iran and 248 in the world while Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) has ranked 2nd in Iran and 526 in the world. As the laboratory's criteria mostly includes indices that cover an interval from 2005 to 2009, it seems it has not noticed the integration of Iran University of Medical Sciences (IUMS) in the calculations and it has ranked IUMS separately—21st .
Turkey's Hacettepe University has ranked first in Turkey and 399 in the World. Istanbul University and Ankara universities have respectively ranked 2nd and 3rd in the country and 415 and 488 in the world.
King Saud University and King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals have ranked 1st and 2nd in Saudi Arabia and 910 and 1087 in the world, respectively.
Universiti Malaya (UM) and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) have ranked 522 and 560 respectively.
As the URAP indicates, the ranking criteria have been based on:
1- Number of Articles
Total number of articles published in 2009 which are indexed by Web of Science. It measures quantity of current scientific output.
2- Google Scholar Results
Google Scholar results from year 2005 to 2009 are used. Google Scholar results help to measure quantity of continuing scientific output. Google Scholar includes journal and conference papers, theses and dissertations, academic books, pre-prints, abstracts, technical reports and other scholarly literature from all broad areas of research.
3- Citation
It is an indicator to evaluate the impact of publications. It is the total number of citations received in 2009 for the articles published in 2005-2009. It measures sustainability of the quality of scientific output. Citation count does not include self citations of authors. The data is obtained from Citation Report of ISI.
4- Cumulative Journal Impact
It is derived by aggregating the impact factors of journals in which a university published articles between 2005 and 2009. The data is based on Journal Impact Factors of ISI in 2009. The cumulative journal impact is calculated by the following formula:
5- H-Index
H Index is an indicator of research quality. It is calculated by averaging the H index values of 2005-2009. This metric is useful because it discounts the disproportionate weight of highly cited papers or papers that have not yet been cited.
6- International Collaboration
International collaboration can be considered as a measure of global acceptance of a university. Total number of documents of a university published in collaboration with the universities of other countries is obtained from ISI database for the years 2005-2009.

Date: 1/22/2011
TUMSPR News: Beijing University of Chinese Medicine president, professor Gao Si Hua, accompanying delegation and China's ambassador to Iran, met with TUMS president, professor Bagher Larijani for discussing the ways for prospective collaborations on January 21, 2011.
Dr. Gao Si Hua, the president for Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, China's ambassador to Iran, Mr. Yu Hongyang, accompanied by the dean of educational administration office, professor Zhai Shuang Qing, the board chairman of Dongzhimen Hospital, professor Li Pengtao, the deputy director of international cooperation department of the university, Dr.Tang Minke and the head of cultural section at China's embassy in Iran, Mr. Zhu Ziaho met with TUMS president, Dr. Bagher Larijani for discussing the ways for prospective collaborations on January 21, 2011.
Welcoming the guests, Dr. Larijani briefly introduced the University, its first rank in research for the 8th consecutive year among 42 medical universities in the country, responsibilities of similar universities which undertake education, research and health of people, something that differentiates Iranian medical universities with most similar universities worldwide.
On the newly established Traditional Medicine Faculty, TUMS chancellor said although the faculty has been established for four years, there are 7000 published books on the field as the country has a resourceful past history in this regard. He then added that medical school graduates could register for a Ph.D. degree in the faculty.
On the dynamicity of the University, chancellor Larijani explained that there were more than 100 projects for change in the educational system—changes that usually spread to the state's universities afterwards.
Dr. Gao Si Hua, the president of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, also introduced the university and expressed his pleasure for traveling to Iran and meeting TUMS chancellor and his colleagues. He then added that he has been familiar with Iranian culture and mentioned past trade and cultural relationship between the two countries where the Silk Road could symbolize this relationship. President Gao then introduce the university in detail and hinted at the collaborative work it has with British, Canadian, Singaporean and US universities.
He later hoped the meeting could open ways for better understanding of each others resources and lead to agreements for collaboration.
Dr. Shams-Ardekani, the dean of TUMS Traditional Medicine Faculty, also welcomed the guests and referred to China and Iran as two ancient civilizations and hoped by the help of the two Iranian and Chinese ambassadors a new era of mutual relationship would commence. He then said that nowadays, traditional medicine even the developed countries is greatly welcomed and Iranian traditional medicine and Chinese medicine which are the only complementary medicine schools with holistic approaches could play an important role in the treatment of disease in the world and could complete each other too.
Dr. Li Pengtao, the chairman of Dongzhimen Hospital, also took the turn to express his feelings about the meeting and said "I have the honor to meet with the chancellor of Tehran University [of Medical Sciences] and as Dr. Shams said Iranian traditional medicine and that of China have a long history and Tibetan medicine is an entity borrowing from the both [schools] and [in short] these two have a lot in common in theoretical point of view.
Dr. Pentago later talked about a city in China named Shenci where a document has been found which belongs to 1300 years ago indicating the role of a Persian physician who had introduced a medication there named "Djousha". He set Saffron as another example which has been imported to Tibetan medicine and then to Chinese medicine. He then said Chinese medicine is [an] important [branch of science] and Chinese culture is too and more important is the way the government supports it to let it grow.
Dr. Pentago said the University was collaborating with a research center under NIH which help treat nausea after chemotherapy by the help of Chinese medicine and said research of this type could be other ways for mutual collaboration between Iran and China.

TUMS Pushes for Better Results at Essential Sciences Indicators
TUMS Pushes for Better Results at Essential Sciences Indicators
Date: 1/11/2011
TUMSPR News: Based on the recent release of Essential Sciences Indicators (ESI), Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) has leaped 24 ranks up by doing better in clinical medicine and pharmacology-toxicology fields.
In the latest release of Essential Sciences Indicators (ESI) in January 1, 2011, which has covered scholarly publications and their citations in the Journals indexed by Web of Knowledge since January 1, 2000 to October 31, 2010 Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) has progressed 24 ranks higher by doing better in clinical medicine and pharmacology-toxicology fields.
Globally, TUMS has ranked 1493 and in clinical medicine and pharmacology-toxicology it has ranked 1086 and 353, respectively. Both fields have had a 21 and 5 rank betterment compared to the previous release.
The basis for the present ranking is the analysis of the data gathered from the top 1% articles with most citations in the Thomson Reuters Web of Knowledge.
The most cited article in clinical medicine for Iran (289 citations) has been coauthored by one of TUMS faculty members, the website indicates -- EARLY LIFE RISK FACTORS FOR OBESITY IN CHILDHOOD: COHORT STUDY, British Medical Journal, 330 (7504): 1357-1359 JUN 11 2005.
Although TUMS publishes 44 scholarly journals, among which 9 have been indexed in Web of Knowledge, 2 in MedLine, 19 in SCOPUS, and 17 in Proquest, the present ranking has just evaluated the tip of the iceberg and a wider inclusion criterion would provide a fairer assessment.
Nationally, Iran has again ranked 40th and in clinical medicine and pharmacology-toxicology it has achieved the 43rd and 35th places respectively.
