TUMS-UT Rank 301-400 in Shanghai Jiao Academic Ranking of World Universities

TUMSPR News: In the latest academic ranking of world universities by Shanghai Jiao Tong higher education institute for the year 2011, University of Tehran and its sister institute Tehran University of Medical Sciences have ranked 301-400 among 1000 top universities.


University of Tehran (UT) and its sister institute, Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), have ranked 301-400 among 1000 top universities in the latest ranking of world universities by Shanghai Jiao Tong higher education institute for the year 2011. Usually more than 1000 universities are ranked by ARWU every year but the best 500 are published on the web.


The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) was first published in 2003 by Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China. ARWU uses six indicators to rank world universities, including:

1- the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes
2- and the number of alumni and staff winning Fields Medals,
3- number of highly cited researchers selected by Thomson Scientific,
4- number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science,
5- number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index,
6- and per capita performance with respect to the size of an institution.

Regarding the aforesaid criteria, TUMS-UT have scored 14.4 in the second criterion, 37.1 in the fifth criterion and 17.7 in the sixth criterion out of 100 for each category to rank 301-400 in 2011.

The broad subject categories for ranking have been:

Natural Sciences and Mathematics,
Engineering / technology and Computer ENG,
Life and Agricultural Sciences,
Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy,
and Social Sciences.
