The Need to Establish a Fasting Research Network, Stresses TUMS Chancellor

TUMSPR News: In a workshop titled Fasting and Health, the Chancellor for Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), Dr. Bagher Larijani, regretted the absence of serious research on fasting and emphasized the need for establishing a fasting research network to organize the research on the subject on July 29, 2011.
In the first workshop titled Fasting and Health held by Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) Endocrinology and Metabolism and Research Institute (EMRI), Dr. Bagher Larijani, regretted the absence of serious research on fasting and emphasized the need for establishing a fasting research network to organize the research on the subject on July 29, 2011.
In the workshop which had been participated by professors of different fields of medicine, including cardiology, endocrinology, nephrology, sports medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, ethics, ophthalmology, psychiatry, etc, the Chancellor said fasting was a common subject in the literature of different medical groups in Islamic countries in which 400 million people practice fasting and physicians were to organize the scientific evidence related to fasting in different disease states.
On the effects of fasting on common diseases, Dr. Larijani said fasting would not increase the prevalence of diseases based on scientific evidence but the kind of nutritional regimens and its ban or allowance in different diseases needs appropriate approaches.
