TUMSPR: In the meeting attended by medical university chancellors from Islamic countries, Tehran University of Medical Sciences was selected as the permanent secretariat for the meeting on February 19, 2011.

Chancellors from Islamic Countries’ Medical Universities attended at Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) to establish a network on February 19 to 20, 2011. On the first day of the meeting TUMS was chosen as the permanent secretariat of the network which tries to focus on closer tiles between Islamic countries for scientific collaboration.

In an interview, TUMS Chancellor, Dr. Bagher Larijani, said the network needed to have a secretariat to develop common interests and get tangible results out of taken decisions. Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) has supported the decision too.

On the meeting itself, the chancellors added that the idea of establishing the network came into existence five years ago and a meeting was held on Kish Island and for the last two years we have been working to hold the present meeting by the help of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education.

The chancellor believed the network will synergize scientific capacities, especially noting the differences between other medical universities and those of Iran that render health services too and that’s why Iranian universities have a high record in health publications.

On the advantages of the preliminary memorandum of understanding and ensuing agreements, the head of the Ministry of Health’s Policy Making Council, said the benefits would include exchange of students and faculties, joint health projects, distance learning, development of new fields of study, creation of links between scholarly journals and alumni, health tourism, and sharing health information. As an example he named the successful experience of bone marrow transplantation by TUMS which is unique in the region and many other capabilities in other Islamic countries that would be available through collaborations.
