Two TUMS Research Centers Sign Memorandum of Understanding with Global Kidney Academy

TUMSPR News: TUMS Nephrology Research Center and Iranian Tissue Bank sign a memorandum of understanding with the Global Kidney Academy on October 8, 2011.

Following a three-day master class in renal transplantation, Professor Meguis El Nahas, the president of the Global Kidney Academy, Professor Mahboub Lessa-pezeshki the head of Nephrology Research Center and Professor Mitra Mahdavi-Mazdeh from the Iranian Tissue Bank and Research Center signed a memorandum of understanding each for collaborations in research and education on October 8, 2011.

The session started at the Nephrology Research Center which is affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) and Dr. Seyed Mansour Gatmiri, welcoming Professor El Nahas, briefly introduced the Center, its dialysis wards, the faculty members and its research and teaching activities. He said the dialysis ward was able to give service to 120 patients by its 30 dialysis machines and the peritoneal dialysis ward to 30 patients.

The manager of TUMS Public Relations said the research and educational activities of the Center were well beyond the hospital or even the University and it held a noticeable number of workshops, symposia, congresses and weekly or monthly conferences for GPs, nurses and specialist.

Later on, Professor El Nahas thanked the authorities of the NRC and introduced the Global Kidney Academy and its online resources and courses which were free to those who registered on the site and its real-time capabilities for discussion and clinical or publication advice. He also talked about the programs the Academy held for the primary health care personnel in subjects such as chronic kidney diseases, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, diabetes and other non-communicable diseases.

He described the objectives of the International Nephrology Education Foundation (iNEF), established by himself, as improvement of healthcare in emerging economies through fostering Education and Leadership in the field of Medicine and Nephrology. He added that this charity organization tried to promotes excellence and leadership amongst young emerging physicians and nephrologists and it awarded nephrologist and pathologist under the age of 45 for substantial contribution to service provision, teaching or research in Renal histopathology in Emerging countries.

Talking about different options for effective collaboration, the three parties signed two memorandums of understanding for research and educational collaboration.

Subsequently, Professor El Nahas visited the Hematology-Oncology and BMT Research Center where Professor Ardeshir Ghavamzadeh, the head of the Center, introduced the range of activities there that included more than 400 bone marrow transplants per year from a former 30 and collaboration with international organizations.

Calling it a unique research center and a place for the treatment of hematologic and oncologic diseases in the region, Professor El Nahas left the Center to visit Hashemi-nezhad Kidney Hospital and Moheb Hospitasl where Dr. Abdi, the head of the Iranian Nephrology Society, and Dr. Osareh, welcomed him and explained that Moheb Hospital was being run semi-privately but the costs there were still one-fifth of the amount charged by the private sector.

Witnessing the level of activity and the well-equipped and trained personnel there, Professor El Nahas admired the way the two hospitals were operating.

TUMSPR News: Upon his visit to the National Museum of Medical Sciences History, Professor Meguid El Nahas calls the place a magnificent journey back in time for the realization of a brilliant past on October 5, 2011.

Holding a three-day master class on renal transplantation from October 4—6, 2011, for the second year in Tehran, the president of the Global Academy of Nephrology, Professor Meguid El Nahas visited the National Museum of Medical Sciences History which is the first medical museum established by a joint project between the Iranian Cultural Heritage Organization, the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education, Iranian Academy of Medical Sciences, and Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS).

Accompanied by Dr, Gatmiri, the manager of TUMS Public Relations and deputy of education of TUMS Nephrology Rresearch Center, and Professor Mitra Mahdavi-Mazdeh, the head of Iranian Tissue Bank and Research Center, Professor El Nahas admired the collection of contemporary, old and ancient artifacts and said they rightfully depicted the tradition of knowledge, innovation and wisdom. He believed the visit to the museum was a great lesson to young doctors as it exhibited the path of transition from traditional to modern medicine.

He described the experience a journey through time from doctors to "Tabibs" and to "Hakims" who were much respected by people for their wisdom and profession.

TUMSPR News: Professor Keyvan Mazda operated five underprivileged patients with scoliosis (severe spinal deformity) on August 14-15, 2011; Dr. Golbakhsh and Dr. Mehrpour (Sina Hospital and Institute Volunteer physicians) assisted him in the surgeries.

Based on the news by the Public Relations of Sina Hospital, Professor Keyvan Mazda operated five underprivileged patients with scoliosis (severe spinal deformity) on August 14-15, 2011. Dr. Golbakhsh and Dr. Mehrpour from Sina Hospital and the Institute of Volunteer physicians, assisted him in the surgeries.

Professor Keyvan Mazda, a universally well-known Iranian-French surgeon, is famous for performing successful complicated spinal surgeries. He was invited by the international charity, Chain of Hope and conducted the surgeries on the disadvantaged Iranian children voluntarily. During his stay in Iran, he examined 300 children and operated 42 cases with severe spinal deformities.

Since 2008, Iranian and French physicians have cooperated with Chain of Hope Charity to help 1435 under 18 children with their treatment in fields of pediatric, pediatric orthopedics and surgery.

TUMSPR News: The second three-day renal transplantation master class lead by Professor Meguid El Nahas, from the University of Sheffield, started today by the coordination of the Iranian Tissue Bank and Research Center, TUMS Nephrology Research Center and the Iranian Society of Nephrology on October 4, 2011.

The second three-day renal transplantation master class lead by the Chairman of the Global Kidney Academy, Professor Meguid El Nahas, commenced in Tehran by the coordination of the Iranian Tissue Bank and Research Center and Nephrology Research Center, both affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), and the Iranian Society of Nephrology on October 4, 2011.

In the opening speech, Dr. Mitra Mahdavi Mazdeh, the Head of the Iranian Tissue Bank and Research Center and the Research Deputy of the largest hospital of TUMS, thanked Professor El Nahas to kindly accept the invitation and travel to Iran to hold the master class for the second year and hoped it could be of help to the participating nephrologists.

Thanking Dr. Mahdavi and other authorities for the occasion, Professor El Nahas, a faculty member of the University of Sheffield at Sheffield Kidney Institute, also expressed his delight for being back again and holding the second renal transplantation master class and regretted that Professor Paul Cockwell, a renowned expert in renal transplantation from Birmingham University, had missed the trip because of some formalities.

He first introduced the Global Kidney Academy (GKA) and its Online Academy's resources and courses which were offered free of charge to the members, its real time discussions, clinical discussion forums, online clinical advisory service and the real time case discussion capabilities of GKA site. He then informed of plans for the development of a universal primary care education covering topics such as CKD, NCD, CVD, HTN and diabetes mellitus.

Later Professor El Nahas introduced the International Nephrology Education Foundation (iNEF), an international charity organization established by himself, which tries to improve healthcare in emerging economies through fostering Education and Leadership in the field of Medicine and Nephrology.

INEF tries to promotes excellence and leadership amongst young emerging physicians and nephrologists. It also gives the Magdi Francis Memorial Prize to nephrologist or pathologist under the age of 45 who have made a substantial contribution to service provision, teaching or research in Renal histopathology in Emerging countries, he added.

Professor El Nahas also mentioned three other awards given by the organization: Leadership in Nephrology Education Award, GKA Ambassador of the Year Award which he said had been dedicated to Professor Mitra Mahdavi-Mazdeh in 2010, for her excellent organization of the first Global Kidney Academy Master Class in Tehran and finally the Innovation in Education Award.

The participant later engaged in the three-day workshop.

TUMSPR News: In a ceremony attended by German, French and Iranian academics, Professor Madjid Samii from International Neuroscience Institute in Hannover, Germany was appointed as the affiliate member of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) on October 2, 2011.

In a ceremony attended by German, French and Iranian academics, Professor Madjid Samii, the renowned Iranian-born neurosurgen who is the president of the International Neuroscience Institute (INI) in Hannover, Germany, was appointed as an affiliate member of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) on October 2, 2011.

In the opening speech, Dr. Ghodsi, the head of TUMS Trauma and Surgery Research Center and the head of Neurosurgery Department talked about the characteristics of Professor Samii that has great affinity for training and educating and has his own school of neurosurgery which is reflective of his undertakings.

He believed cooperation of Dr. Samii would help the University would be developed scientifically [in neuroscience] and a new path would be opened for the development of neuroscience in Iran.

In his speech, Dr. Majid Ghaffarpour, the head of TUMS Neurology Research Center at TUMS Neuroscience Institute, gave a short account of the history of neurosurgery in Iran that once started by the help of Professor Narimani and it has now developed to the Neurology Research Center with advanced biochemistry and neurogenetic labs and advanced imaging wards. He added that all the progresses had been made possible by following Imam Khomeini’s recommendations for being self-confident and self-reliant.

He said by the development of medicine and introduction of new fields some criticized specialists for losing their holistic approach in treating patients but this weakness has been taken care of by team work that Professor Samii has always suggested.

Expressing his delight for the affiliation, Dr. Imami-razavi, the Vice-minister of Health and head of TUMS Neuroscience Institute said Professor Samii was the symbol of the elite Iranians in the world in some sense and TUMS has also been regarded as the symbol of higher education in Iran by the leader and this cooperation would be a good source of scientific activity.

He also hinted at the two memorandum of understandings that had been prepared by TUMS Chancellor and authorities of Hannover University to empower and train human resources by the help of INI and collaborate with the Center for Comprehensive Neurological Services that would be established in the near future.

On the potentials of the University in the field of neuroscience, Dr. Imami-razavi said about 100 faculty members were actively doing research and practicing and give service to more than 200 patients in outpatient and inpatient settings every month in TUMS Neuroscience Institute.

In his speech, TUMS Chancellor, Dr. Bagher Larijani, called Professor Samii a national asset and a person of high impact and very valuable for the University whose cooperation would be a source of positive changes. He then introduced the university, its teaching hospitals and research centers and the scientific output of the university that composed a remarkable portion in international databases. He said TUMS was training more than 50% of PhD candidates in the field of medical sciences.

In the end, Dr. Larijani said affiliate professors of TUMS were an honor for the University and by their help TUMS has developed good ties with reputed universities in the world and it was an honor to have affiliate professors like Dr. Hussein Al-Gezairy, the director of WHO-EMRO, Dr. Mahathir Muhammad, the former prime minister of Malaysia, Professor Gharib, Professor Ketabchi, Dr. Fotourch, and the latest one, Professor Samii.

Eventually, Professor Samii said the ceremony was of a historic importance to him as he had lived in Tehran in his childhood, and completed his primary school there, and being a faculty of the largest and most important University Iran which was situated in Tehran was a point to be proud of although he was a member of many other universities worldwide.

On the introduction of neurosurgery to Iran, Professor Samii said Dr. Nasrollah Ameli and Dr. Ibrahim Samii were the first pioneers who established and developed this field in Iran.

On the importance of the collaborations and establishment of the Comprehensive Center for Neurological Services, he hoped he could gather the best scientist in the field of neurosciences there.

In the end the affiliation ceremony was performed and the agreement for collaboration for a joint PhD program and clinical neurosurgery fellowship with INI were signed.

TUMSPR News: The Asian Journal of Sports Medicine published by Tehran University of Medical Sciences has been indexed by Scopus in 2011.

Based on the news by the Office for the Promotion of Journals affiliated to the vice-chancellor for Research of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), Asian Journal of Sports Medicine published by the University has been indexed in Scopus. This is the 23rd journal which has been indexed by the database. More than half of TUMS 44 journals have been published by the institute so far.

TUMSPR News: The new academic year 2011 – 2012 officially began in Tehran University of Medical Sciences by the participation of students, newcomer students and their parents, and the Universities steering committee and staff on September 26, 2011.

The new academic year 2011 – 2012 officially began in Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) by the participation of students, newcomer students and their parents, and the Universities steering committee, including the Chancellor, Dr. Bagher Larijani, the head of TUMS Public Relations, Dr. Seyed Mansour Gatmiri, vice-chancellor for research, Dr. Fotouhi, vice-chancellor for education, Dr. Jalili, vice-chancellor for student affairs, Dr. Mohaghegh and for Cultural Affairs, Dr. Parviz at Razi Congress Hall on September 26, 2011.

The opening speech was by the head of TUMS Public Relations who said “You have been fortunate to be led to the land of knowledge, and to the largest and best of all, TUMS”. He hoped the students could serve the society by recognition of true science. He advised them to respect their parents and professors and value their efforts.

Dr. Moslem Bahadori, the head of TUMS Alumni Office, was the second to give his speech in recognition of science from 4500 years ago in Persia and called it the cradle of science and exemplified some of those glories still present such as the cylinder of Cyrus the Great, the “first declaration of human rights”, to the medical school and hospitals of Jondishapour and Neishabour despite the invasion by Alexander or that of Arabs who set ablaze to large libraries.

Dr. Bahadori, called educating the best students, training unique humans and production of knowledge, the three characteristics of TUMS and said the students were the heir of the great scientific advances of the University and expected to follow this path to greatness.

Dr. Malekzadeh, the former Health Minister and one of the 1% top scientists of the world, was the next person to take the podium. Appreciating the years of holly defense against Iraq invasion, he said the field of medicine was a difficult one and becoming a medical doctor necessitated self-sacrifice and devotion. He said practicing medicine was [one of] the greatest blessing(s) that God had given to man to serve the sick. Being trusted by people was the main asset of medical doctors, he said.

Dr. Parvin Pasalar, the head of TUMS Talented Students Center, introduced 7 rules of success, planning, maintaining high spirits, time management, understanding lessons, giving and getting feed backs, being multidimensional and doing evidence-based practice in her speech and encouraged the new-comer students to study basic sciences in depth.

Putting the emphasis on seeking science, Dr. Shafiei, the former dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, said the Country needed the students to help eradicate illiteracy and solve the problems.

He also emphasized on the ethical issues and encouraged students to pray God as it was the way to beatitude.

Finally, the Chancellor congratulated the new academic year to the students and their families and shortly introduced the undertaking of the University and its educational and research frameworks. He said by 80 research centers the university had been able to organize vast educational and research activities that had gained both honor and reputation for the institute.

On the international achievements of the University and its faculty members, the Chancellor said the University accompanied by its sister institute, University of Tehran, had gained a position between 3001 – 400 among 1000 top universities of the world in July 2011 based on Shanghai ranking of world universities. TUMS also had achieved the 1278th rank in Essential Sciences Indicators (ESI), he added .

He finally urged the students to shoulder the responsibility for developing their talents and the University.
