TUMSPR News: The 2nd International Congress on Recent Advances in Medical Sciences held by Dr. Alireza Yalda Foundation located in Germany and Tehran University of Medical Sciences came to an end by honoring 34 researchers in both basic and clinical medical sciences on October 27, 2011.

The 2nd International Congress on Recent Advances in Medical Sciences held on October 24-26, 2011 by Dr. Alireza Yalda Foundation, located in Germany, and Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) came to an end by honoring 34 researchers in both basic and clinical medical sciences at the National Museum of the History of Medicine in the evening of October 27, 2011.

Dr. Moslem Bahadori, the head of TUMS Alumni Office, evaluated achievement of the objectives of the congress as excellent especially in fields of medical genetics and stem cells. He called the introduced research results as novel and the researchers among the best n the world and hoped the congress could continue in coming years.

Thanking the participation of renowned Iranian-born researchers who reside in Germany, Professor Bahadori said the University and the TUMS AO were prepared to develop cooperation with Iranian researchers there.

Professor Alireza Ranjbar, the president of the congress, said about 50 top national and international researchers had participated in the three-day event and its 6 workshops.

Professor Ranjbar added that in the course of the congress, more than 30 research papers had been presented in the field of basic and clinical medicine and molecular biology. He said the nominees had been in five different categories.

The awards were given to 34 top researchers by Professor Bagher Larijani, TUMS Chancellor, and Professor Alireza Yalda, the founder of modern infectious diseases in Iran who is famous for his ethical practice of medicine and has evaded private practice to fully serve the patients in teaching hospitals.

Professor Yalda who recently got his distinguished professorship from TUMS Chancellor and an award from the Minister of Health, said “Today we have gathered to respect the kind of professorship which gives equal importance to science and ethics while teaching the students and scientific meetings like this one are of importance as they help humans grow spiritually”.

He later emphasized on teaching of ethics to students to guarantee the health of the society. He said if medical students approach the field for monetary advantages they seemingly would benefit but they would not attain the true success.

Having got their awards from the Chancellor or Professor Yalda, most awardees briefly took the podium to express their ideas and feelings.

Health Minister, Enthusiasts Honor Professor Alireza Yalda’s Lifelong Ethical Practice of Medicine and Teachings at 2nd International Congress on Recent Advances in Medical Sciences

TUMSPR News: At the commencement of the 2nd International Congress on Recent Advances in Medical Sciences, Professor Alireza Yalda’s lifelong achievement, ethical practice of medicine and teachings were honored by the Health Minister, TUMS Chancellor and a large number of academics on October 24, 2011.

Professor Alireza Yalda’s lifelong achievement, ethical practice of medicine and teachings were praised at the commencement of the 2nd International Congress on Recent Advances in Medical Sciences at Imam Khomeini Conference Hall under Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) in Tehran. The congress is held annually by Professor Alireza Yalda’s Academic Foundation. This year the participants included the Health Minister, Dr. Marzieh Vahid-dastjerdi, TUMS Chancellor, Dr. bagher Larijani and a large number of academics, residents and students on October 24, 2011.

Dr. Alireza Ranjbar, the congress president, on honoring Professor Yalda said, the professor’s unique characteristics pulled together all his enthusiasts among the authorities and academics inside and outside the country.

On the success of the Foundation, Dr. Ranjbar said by TUMS Chancellor’s supports the Foundation was gathering popularity and reputation nationally and internationally just three years of its foundation.

He then described the medals of Honor dedicated in five different categories to researchers and clinicians: innovation, young researchers, professional responsibility, distinguished professors and to internationally renowned figures.

In his speech on introducing the Alumni Office of the University, Professor Moslem Bahadori emphasized on the recognition of TUMS academics and researchers that had gained reputation for the institution in the world. He disclosed the Office’s intention to get in touch with more than 100 thousand alumni of the University haaving overcoe the obstacles in the early days of its establishing. At the present that the Office has a building of its own a bilingual website and branches in TUMS schools which have been made possible by the help of the Chancellor he said.

Honoring the elite professor of the University, TUMS Chancellor said alumni members like Professor Yalda were essential for the development of the institution. Recognizing Dr. Yalda as a model of education he said dignitaries such as Professor Bahadori, Professor Shams Tarighat Torbaghan, Professor Aghighi, etc were constellation of stars in the University who helped the University prosper in the past fifty years in education, research and new technologies. He called Professor Yalda a model for knowledge-oriented teaching.

Referring to the University’s 77 years of brilliant past history, the Minister of Health said that the graduates of TUMS were the founder of other universities in Iran and she personally was proud of being an alumnus of the Unuiversity.

On the importance of ethics the Minister said “We teach medicine to student but we know medical ethics is as important for the students and the universities”.

Finally, Professor Yalda gave his brief speech and described worst teachers as the ones who maintained the teacher-student relationship to his former students as they could not overtake him in knowledge. He likened a teacher to somebody who kept on helping children to safely land on the other bank of a river while they were moving up the ladder of science.

He later expressed his gratitude for the meeting and two plaques of appreciation and distinguished professorship were dedicated to him by the Minister and the Chancellor.

TUMS Digestive Diseases Research Institute to Actively Particiate in the United European Gastroenterology Week

TUMSPR News: Nine faculty members of TUMS Digestive Diseases Research Institute will participate in the United European Gastroenterology Week held in Stockholm, Sweden, from October 22nd to 24th, 2011.

Based on the news by the Public Relations of the Digestive Diseases Research Institute (DDRI) affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), nine faculty members of the Institute will participate in the the United European Gastroenterology Week (UEGW) which is the largest and the most recognized gastroenterology assembly in Europe. The assembly will be held in Stockholm, Sweden, from October 22nd to 24th, 2011.

DDRI researches actively participates in the assembly every year and submit scholarly articles to this congress. This year, 10 articles by 9 faculty members of DDRI will be presented in UEGW in the form of lectures or posters..

TUMSPR News: Professor Harry Malach and Dr. Elisabeth Kang, both from NIH, and Professor Hans Ochs from the University of Washington visited TUMS Children's Medical Center upon participating in the 4th Clinical Immunology and Immunodeficiency Congress and 23rd International Congress of Pediatrics held in Tehran, Iran on October 13-17, 2011.

According to the Public Relations of Children's Medical Center affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), Professor Harry Malach and Dr. Elisabeth Kang, both from NIH, and Professor Hans Ochs from the University of Washington visited TUMS Children's Medical Center upon attending the 4th Clinical immunology and Immunodeficiency Congress organized along with the 23rd International Congress of Pediatrics held in Tehran, Iran on October 13-17, 2011.

The group visited the Center and its research centers located in this hospital while discussing and emphasizing the importance of establishing a cell therapy unit there which is supposed to started in early 2012.

The group stated their will to continue their contact with this center and scientifically support the scientists and the research centers there for prospective collaborations.

TUMSPR News: TUMS Basic and Clinical Neuroscience and Hayat journals have been indexed in the Scopus database and DARU Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences in PubMed and PubMed Central in the year 2011.

Based on the report by the Office for the Promotion of TUMS Journals and Provision of Electronic Resources affiliated to the vice-chancellor for research, DARU Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences is the third journal of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) to be indexed in PubMed and PubMed Central. The published issues of the Journal in 2010 will be available on the aforesaid database next month. This journal is published by TUMS Faculty of Pharmacy.

Moreover, the Basic and Clinical Neuroscience and Hayat journals have been indexed in Scopus database in 2011.

TheBasic and Clinical Neuroscience journal is the 25th journal of the University that is indexed in Scopus. This journal is the first neuroscience journal in Iran that is indexed in the database. The official publishers of the journal are the Neuroscience Departments of Tehran and Shahid Beheshti Universities of Medical Sciences.

Hayat is the first Iranian nursing journal and TUMS fourth Persian language journal to be published in Scopus. The journal is published by TUMS Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery.

TUMSPR News: The second International Congress on the Latest Medical Research Achievements will be held in the honor of Professor Alireza Yalda, one of the distinguished professors of Tehran University of Medical Sciences will be held in Tehran on October 24 to 26th, 2011.

The second International Congress on the Latest Medical Research Achievements in the Honor of Professor Alireza Yalda, one of the distinguished professors of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) will be held at Imam Khomeini Hospital Complex in Tehran on October 24 to 26th, 2011.

The conference is a joint effort by TUMS Alumni Office, which is headed by Professor Moslem Bahadori, and Professor Alireza Yalda Foundation established by some of Iranian physicians and researchers living abroad. Some of TUMS research centers including the Nephrology Research Center have announced their participation in the congress.

The congress will be held by the attendance of TUMS Chancellor, Professor Bagher Larijani, and a large number of physicians and researchers from inside and outside Iran who have already registered in the congress.

The congress is an accredited one and certificates of attendance and different awards in different categories will be given to the best in the Research Festival which is to be held on 27th of October 2011.

Two TUMS Research Centers Sign Memorandum of Understanding with Global Kidney Academy

TUMSPR News: TUMS Nephrology Research Center and Iranian Tissue Bank sign a memorandum of understanding with the Global Kidney Academy on October 8, 2011.

Following a three-day master class in renal transplantation, Professor Meguis El Nahas, the president of the Global Kidney Academy, Professor Mahboub Lessa-pezeshki the head of Nephrology Research Center and Professor Mitra Mahdavi-Mazdeh from the Iranian Tissue Bank and Research Center signed a memorandum of understanding each for collaborations in research and education on October 8, 2011.

The session started at the Nephrology Research Center which is affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) and Dr. Seyed Mansour Gatmiri, welcoming Professor El Nahas, briefly introduced the Center, its dialysis wards, the faculty members and its research and teaching activities. He said the dialysis ward was able to give service to 120 patients by its 30 dialysis machines and the peritoneal dialysis ward to 30 patients.

The manager of TUMS Public Relations said the research and educational activities of the Center were well beyond the hospital or even the University and it held a noticeable number of workshops, symposia, congresses and weekly or monthly conferences for GPs, nurses and specialist.

Later on, Professor El Nahas thanked the authorities of the NRC and introduced the Global Kidney Academy and its online resources and courses which were free to those who registered on the site and its real-time capabilities for discussion and clinical or publication advice. He also talked about the programs the Academy held for the primary health care personnel in subjects such as chronic kidney diseases, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, diabetes and other non-communicable diseases.

He described the objectives of the International Nephrology Education Foundation (iNEF), established by himself, as improvement of healthcare in emerging economies through fostering Education and Leadership in the field of Medicine and Nephrology. He added that this charity organization tried to promotes excellence and leadership amongst young emerging physicians and nephrologists and it awarded nephrologist and pathologist under the age of 45 for substantial contribution to service provision, teaching or research in Renal histopathology in Emerging countries.

Talking about different options for effective collaboration, the three parties signed two memorandums of understanding for research and educational collaboration.

Subsequently, Professor El Nahas visited the Hematology-Oncology and BMT Research Center where Professor Ardeshir Ghavamzadeh, the head of the Center, introduced the range of activities there that included more than 400 bone marrow transplants per year from a former 30 and collaboration with international organizations.

Calling it a unique research center and a place for the treatment of hematologic and oncologic diseases in the region, Professor El Nahas left the Center to visit Hashemi-nezhad Kidney Hospital and Moheb Hospitasl where Dr. Abdi, the head of the Iranian Nephrology Society, and Dr. Osareh, welcomed him and explained that Moheb Hospital was being run semi-privately but the costs there were still one-fifth of the amount charged by the private sector.

Witnessing the level of activity and the well-equipped and trained personnel there, Professor El Nahas admired the way the two hospitals were operating.

TUMSPR News: Upon his visit to the National Museum of Medical Sciences History, Professor Meguid El Nahas calls the place a magnificent journey back in time for the realization of a brilliant past on October 5, 2011.

Holding a three-day master class on renal transplantation from October 4—6, 2011, for the second year in Tehran, the president of the Global Academy of Nephrology, Professor Meguid El Nahas visited the National Museum of Medical Sciences History which is the first medical museum established by a joint project between the Iranian Cultural Heritage Organization, the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education, Iranian Academy of Medical Sciences, and Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS).

Accompanied by Dr, Gatmiri, the manager of TUMS Public Relations and deputy of education of TUMS Nephrology Rresearch Center, and Professor Mitra Mahdavi-Mazdeh, the head of Iranian Tissue Bank and Research Center, Professor El Nahas admired the collection of contemporary, old and ancient artifacts and said they rightfully depicted the tradition of knowledge, innovation and wisdom. He believed the visit to the museum was a great lesson to young doctors as it exhibited the path of transition from traditional to modern medicine.

He described the experience a journey through time from doctors to "Tabibs" and to "Hakims" who were much respected by people for their wisdom and profession.

Professor Keyvan Mazda Operates for Hearts in Sina Hospital

TUMSPR News: Professor Keyvan Mazda operated five underprivileged patients with scoliosis (severe spinal deformity) on August 14-15, 2011; Dr. Golbakhsh and Dr. Mehrpour (Sina Hospital and Institute Volunteer physicians) assisted him in the surgeries.

Based on the news by the Public Relations of Sina Hospital, Professor Keyvan Mazda operated five underprivileged patients with scoliosis (severe spinal deformity) on August 14-15, 2011. Dr. Golbakhsh and Dr. Mehrpour from Sina Hospital and the Institute of Volunteer physicians, assisted him in the surgeries.

Professor Keyvan Mazda, a universally well-known Iranian-French surgeon, is famous for performing successful complicated spinal surgeries. He was invited by the international charity, Chain of Hope and conducted the surgeries on the disadvantaged Iranian children voluntarily. During his stay in Iran, he examined 300 children and operated 42 cases with severe spinal deformities.

Since 2008, Iranian and French physicians have cooperated with Chain of Hope Charity to help 1435 under 18 children with their treatment in fields of pediatric, pediatric orthopedics and surgery.

TUMSPR News: The second three-day renal transplantation master class lead by Professor Meguid El Nahas, from the University of Sheffield, started today by the coordination of the Iranian Tissue Bank and Research Center, TUMS Nephrology Research Center and the Iranian Society of Nephrology on October 4, 2011.

The second three-day renal transplantation master class lead by the Chairman of the Global Kidney Academy, Professor Meguid El Nahas, commenced in Tehran by the coordination of the Iranian Tissue Bank and Research Center and Nephrology Research Center, both affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), and the Iranian Society of Nephrology on October 4, 2011.

In the opening speech, Dr. Mitra Mahdavi Mazdeh, the Head of the Iranian Tissue Bank and Research Center and the Research Deputy of the largest hospital of TUMS, thanked Professor El Nahas to kindly accept the invitation and travel to Iran to hold the master class for the second year and hoped it could be of help to the participating nephrologists.

Thanking Dr. Mahdavi and other authorities for the occasion, Professor El Nahas, a faculty member of the University of Sheffield at Sheffield Kidney Institute, also expressed his delight for being back again and holding the second renal transplantation master class and regretted that Professor Paul Cockwell, a renowned expert in renal transplantation from Birmingham University, had missed the trip because of some formalities.

He first introduced the Global Kidney Academy (GKA) and its Online Academy's resources and courses which were offered free of charge to the members, its real time discussions, clinical discussion forums, online clinical advisory service and the real time case discussion capabilities of GKA site. He then informed of plans for the development of a universal primary care education covering topics such as CKD, NCD, CVD, HTN and diabetes mellitus.

Later Professor El Nahas introduced the International Nephrology Education Foundation (iNEF), an international charity organization established by himself, which tries to improve healthcare in emerging economies through fostering Education and Leadership in the field of Medicine and Nephrology.

INEF tries to promotes excellence and leadership amongst young emerging physicians and nephrologists. It also gives the Magdi Francis Memorial Prize to nephrologist or pathologist under the age of 45 who have made a substantial contribution to service provision, teaching or research in Renal histopathology in Emerging countries, he added.

Professor El Nahas also mentioned three other awards given by the organization: Leadership in Nephrology Education Award, GKA Ambassador of the Year Award which he said had been dedicated to Professor Mitra Mahdavi-Mazdeh in 2010, for her excellent organization of the first Global Kidney Academy Master Class in Tehran and finally the Innovation in Education Award.

The participant later engaged in the three-day workshop.

TUMSPR News: In a ceremony attended by German, French and Iranian academics, Professor Madjid Samii from International Neuroscience Institute in Hannover, Germany was appointed as the affiliate member of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) on October 2, 2011.

In a ceremony attended by German, French and Iranian academics, Professor Madjid Samii, the renowned Iranian-born neurosurgen who is the president of the International Neuroscience Institute (INI) in Hannover, Germany, was appointed as an affiliate member of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) on October 2, 2011.

In the opening speech, Dr. Ghodsi, the head of TUMS Trauma and Surgery Research Center and the head of Neurosurgery Department talked about the characteristics of Professor Samii that has great affinity for training and educating and has his own school of neurosurgery which is reflective of his undertakings.

He believed cooperation of Dr. Samii would help the University would be developed scientifically [in neuroscience] and a new path would be opened for the development of neuroscience in Iran.

In his speech, Dr. Majid Ghaffarpour, the head of TUMS Neurology Research Center at TUMS Neuroscience Institute, gave a short account of the history of neurosurgery in Iran that once started by the help of Professor Narimani and it has now developed to the Neurology Research Center with advanced biochemistry and neurogenetic labs and advanced imaging wards. He added that all the progresses had been made possible by following Imam Khomeini’s recommendations for being self-confident and self-reliant.

He said by the development of medicine and introduction of new fields some criticized specialists for losing their holistic approach in treating patients but this weakness has been taken care of by team work that Professor Samii has always suggested.

Expressing his delight for the affiliation, Dr. Imami-razavi, the Vice-minister of Health and head of TUMS Neuroscience Institute said Professor Samii was the symbol of the elite Iranians in the world in some sense and TUMS has also been regarded as the symbol of higher education in Iran by the leader and this cooperation would be a good source of scientific activity.

He also hinted at the two memorandum of understandings that had been prepared by TUMS Chancellor and authorities of Hannover University to empower and train human resources by the help of INI and collaborate with the Center for Comprehensive Neurological Services that would be established in the near future.

On the potentials of the University in the field of neuroscience, Dr. Imami-razavi said about 100 faculty members were actively doing research and practicing and give service to more than 200 patients in outpatient and inpatient settings every month in TUMS Neuroscience Institute.

In his speech, TUMS Chancellor, Dr. Bagher Larijani, called Professor Samii a national asset and a person of high impact and very valuable for the University whose cooperation would be a source of positive changes. He then introduced the university, its teaching hospitals and research centers and the scientific output of the university that composed a remarkable portion in international databases. He said TUMS was training more than 50% of PhD candidates in the field of medical sciences.

In the end, Dr. Larijani said affiliate professors of TUMS were an honor for the University and by their help TUMS has developed good ties with reputed universities in the world and it was an honor to have affiliate professors like Dr. Hussein Al-Gezairy, the director of WHO-EMRO, Dr. Mahathir Muhammad, the former prime minister of Malaysia, Professor Gharib, Professor Ketabchi, Dr. Fotourch, and the latest one, Professor Samii.

Eventually, Professor Samii said the ceremony was of a historic importance to him as he had lived in Tehran in his childhood, and completed his primary school there, and being a faculty of the largest and most important University Iran which was situated in Tehran was a point to be proud of although he was a member of many other universities worldwide.

On the introduction of neurosurgery to Iran, Professor Samii said Dr. Nasrollah Ameli and Dr. Ibrahim Samii were the first pioneers who established and developed this field in Iran.

On the importance of the collaborations and establishment of the Comprehensive Center for Neurological Services, he hoped he could gather the best scientist in the field of neurosciences there.

In the end the affiliation ceremony was performed and the agreement for collaboration for a joint PhD program and clinical neurosurgery fellowship with INI were signed.

TUMSPR News: The Asian Journal of Sports Medicine published by Tehran University of Medical Sciences has been indexed by Scopus in 2011.

Based on the news by the Office for the Promotion of Journals affiliated to the vice-chancellor for Research of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), Asian Journal of Sports Medicine published by the University has been indexed in Scopus. This is the 23rd journal which has been indexed by the database. More than half of TUMS 44 journals have been published by the institute so far.

TUMSPR News: The new academic year 2011 – 2012 officially began in Tehran University of Medical Sciences by the participation of students, newcomer students and their parents, and the Universities steering committee and staff on September 26, 2011.

The new academic year 2011 – 2012 officially began in Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) by the participation of students, newcomer students and their parents, and the Universities steering committee, including the Chancellor, Dr. Bagher Larijani, the head of TUMS Public Relations, Dr. Seyed Mansour Gatmiri, vice-chancellor for research, Dr. Fotouhi, vice-chancellor for education, Dr. Jalili, vice-chancellor for student affairs, Dr. Mohaghegh and for Cultural Affairs, Dr. Parviz at Razi Congress Hall on September 26, 2011.

The opening speech was by the head of TUMS Public Relations who said “You have been fortunate to be led to the land of knowledge, and to the largest and best of all, TUMS”. He hoped the students could serve the society by recognition of true science. He advised them to respect their parents and professors and value their efforts.

Dr. Moslem Bahadori, the head of TUMS Alumni Office, was the second to give his speech in recognition of science from 4500 years ago in Persia and called it the cradle of science and exemplified some of those glories still present such as the cylinder of Cyrus the Great, the “first declaration of human rights”, to the medical school and hospitals of Jondishapour and Neishabour despite the invasion by Alexander or that of Arabs who set ablaze to large libraries.

Dr. Bahadori, called educating the best students, training unique humans and production of knowledge, the three characteristics of TUMS and said the students were the heir of the great scientific advances of the University and expected to follow this path to greatness.

Dr. Malekzadeh, the former Health Minister and one of the 1% top scientists of the world, was the next person to take the podium. Appreciating the years of holly defense against Iraq invasion, he said the field of medicine was a difficult one and becoming a medical doctor necessitated self-sacrifice and devotion. He said practicing medicine was [one of] the greatest blessing(s) that God had given to man to serve the sick. Being trusted by people was the main asset of medical doctors, he said.

Dr. Parvin Pasalar, the head of TUMS Talented Students Center, introduced 7 rules of success, planning, maintaining high spirits, time management, understanding lessons, giving and getting feed backs, being multidimensional and doing evidence-based practice in her speech and encouraged the new-comer students to study basic sciences in depth.

Putting the emphasis on seeking science, Dr. Shafiei, the former dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, said the Country needed the students to help eradicate illiteracy and solve the problems.

He also emphasized on the ethical issues and encouraged students to pray God as it was the way to beatitude.

Finally, the Chancellor congratulated the new academic year to the students and their families and shortly introduced the undertaking of the University and its educational and research frameworks. He said by 80 research centers the university had been able to organize vast educational and research activities that had gained both honor and reputation for the institute.

On the international achievements of the University and its faculty members, the Chancellor said the University accompanied by its sister institute, University of Tehran, had gained a position between 3001 – 400 among 1000 top universities of the world in July 2011 based on Shanghai ranking of world universities. TUMS also had achieved the 1278th rank in Essential Sciences Indicators (ESI), he added .

He finally urged the students to shoulder the responsibility for developing their talents and the University.

TUMSPR News: Shahid Rahnemoun Field Hospital's 3-day lab performance maneuver came to an end with success on Sept 27, 2011.

Based on the news by the Public Relations of Sina Hospital, the three-day laboratory performance of Shahid Rahnemoun Field Hospital ercted by the oldest hospital in Iran, Sina Hospital, came to an end on September 27, 2011.

Heidari, the head of the laboratory, was quoted as saying that the activities had been a good experience, especially for those who had never taken part in such activities and the personnel in the laboratory had tried to perform all the requested tests.

Heidari further mentioned that the staff had never the experience of working in a field hospital and such programs had been of great help them to evaluate themselves and make themselves ready for the times of crises.

He added that "Working in a field hospital in teams is necessary for the healthcare staff. Being in such an environment is a lesson for cooperation with the staff from other organizations when the function of the whole system needs agility and precision".

TUMSPR News: In a message to the students, TUMS Chancellor, Dr. Bagher Larijani, has congratulated the news academic year and has asked them to perceive the greatness of their responsibility to properly add to the values of the University by developing their talents.

In a message to the students, Dr. Bagher Larijani, the Chancellor for Tehran University of Medical Sciences, has congratulated the new academic year to the students and especially to the newcomer students and has asked them to perceive the greatness of their responsibility to properly add to the values of the University by developing their talents.

The message reads as follows:

In the Name of God

The 2011-2012 academic year has officially been started. The University is commencing its 76th year but [in fact] the history of modern medicine at Tehran University of Mmedical Sciences (TUMS) is at its 160th year from the day modern medicine came to life at Dar ul-Funun, the first modern institution of higher learning in Persia, and TUMS is its continuum.

I personally congratulate the new academic year to all students, especially the ones that newly have joined this great scientific and research institution, and the faculty members and staff of the University and hope they begin a vibrant year full of happiness.

But I intend to briefly remind a few points, especially to the freshman students and attract their attention to them.

First of all, you are truly the best medical sciences students of the country to have been able to compete with hundreds of thousands of students and enter the University. This is a great reward for your efforts and your respected families support. Cherish this blessing and sufficiently benefit from it.

Secondly, this gift from God has been completed by another blessing and that is being exposed in tender age with more than 2000 of the most knowledgeable and most valued professors in the field of medical sciences in the country.

Thirdly, this prosperous scientific institute with its educational and research frameworks that are unique to the country provides a place for you to develop your talents.

Availability of the access to more than 5000 scholarly journal in TUMS Digital Library, hundreds of electronic textbooks and experienced professors in every field all provide an environment to do research better than anywhere else in the country.

At the present time, the University with its 200 specialty programs and 11 schools and 27 hospitals, more than 2000 research projects in 80 research centers has organized vast activities in the realm of education and research. These activities have gained both honor and reputation for the University. An example for this is the latest research ranks that place us ahead of other universities for the ninth year in a row with marks twice as much of others in the evaluations could better describe our commitment to research.

In essential science indicators (ESI) the University has gained the 1278th rank in the world and in Shanghai ranking of world universities TUMS with its sister institute, University of Tehran, gained a position between 3001 – 400 among 1000 top universities of the world in July 2011.

More than 40% of high quality research articles in the field of medical sciences indexed in ISI Web of Knowledge and MedLine are produced and published by TUMS while only 12% of the faculty members in medical universities are from this university.
Graduates and postgraduates of this University and more than 80 research centers affiliated to it usually rank the highest in the country.

These are some of the honors achieved by the University in education and research and we should not forget the great inventions and innovations of the University that are the fruit of the efforts put to world by many researchers in different fields.

Your responsibility is one of the most eminent one by joining this constellation of elites. Do your best to gain as much as possible in this atmosphere and develop you scientific dimensions and prepare yourself to add to its valuable achievements. This way you make sure you have responded properly and added value to your talents and the University.

TUMSPR News: Following his meeting with TUMS Chancellor and his visit to TUMS School of Traditional Medicine and Research Center for Science and Technology in Medicine, Dr. Hussein Al-Gezairy, the Director of the World Health Organization in Eastern Mediterranean Region meets with Dr. Ahmadinezhad on September 13, 2011.

Based on the news by the Iranian Presidential website, Dr. Hussein Al-Gezairy, the Director of the World Health Organization in Eastern Mediterranean Region met with Dr. Ahmadinezhad, following his meeting with the Chancellor for Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) and his visit to TUMS School of Traditional Medicine and Research Center for Science and Technology in Medicine on September 13, 2011.

In his talks, Dr. Ahmadinezhad emphasized on the importance of the revival of traditional medicine which is congruent with the Iranian culture and it is much more economical in comparision with the current commercial look at treatment in the west.

He argued that health was the center of all issues and without health, humans would not have much function and they could not develop their potentials. He also emphasized on the priority of prevention and said any investment in health was much needed and its promotion entailed education, investment and development of proper grass root activities.

The Ministry of Health and Medical Education (MoHME) released the result of eight research center categories for the year 2011 and Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) has gained 42% of the first to third ranks.

TUMS Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Institute and Psychiatry Research Center (R.C.) have ranked first, Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases R.C., Pharmaceutical Sciences R.C. Ophthalmology R.C., Research Center for Science and Technology In Medicine and Cardiac Surgery and Grafting R.C. have ranked second and the Center for Application of Health Sciences and Cancer R.C. have ranked third among peer centers in Iran.

Among research centers with independent budget, TUMS Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Institute with 9922 points, TUMS Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases R.C., Pharmaceutical R.C. with 9259 points and Endocrinology and Metabolism RC. Affiliated to Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences (SUMS) with 2888 points have ranked first to third.

TUMSPR News: Dr. Hulki Uz, the United Nations Population Fund representative in Iran visited Nour Saadat Urban Health Center, affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences on September 18, 2011.

The representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Iran, Dr. Hulki Uz, visited Nour Saadat Urban Health Center, affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) while accompanied by Dr. Zahra Talebi, in charge of the reproductive health unit of the Center, and Ms. Maryam Saadi a family planning unit staff on September 18, 2011.

Attending a vasectomy operation, Dr. Safaari, a vasectomist, and Dr. Habibi, the head of the Center briefly introduced the wide range of family planning activities offered in the center.

Nour Saadat Urban Health Center is one of the most equipped health center in southern Tehran to offer reproductive health services in Tehran.

TUMSPR News: Dr. Hussein Al-Gezairy, the Director of the World Health Organization in Eastern Mediterranean Region visited the School of Traditional Medicine affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences and engaged in talks with the dean and authorities of the School on September 14, 2011.

Dr. Hussein Al-Gezairy, the Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (WHO-EMRO) and an affiliate professor of TUMS, visited theSchool of Traditional Medicine affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) and engaged in talks with the Dean of the School, Dr. Shams-ardekani, Dr. Niknam, the acting health minister, and some academics there before visiting the School’s clinics in action on September 14, 2011.

Welcoming Dr. Gezairy on his visit to the School, Dr. Sahms-ardekani reminded the brilliant and long history of traditional medicine of Iran which formed part of the Iranian civilization and Islamic culture and availability of more than 17000 books on the subject was on top of the list among similar practices. He then said the science had been forgotten for nearly two centuries till the time after the revolution in Iran that decisions were made to revive it and introduce it to its universities. Upon its introduction to universities in 2007, a lot of progress has been made to develop the subject for scholarly education and establishment of TUMS and Shahid Beheshti University of medical Sciences (SUMS) Schools of traditional medicine plus some other ones were the examples of the efforts, Dr. Shams-ardekani said.

TUMS School of Traditional Medicine (STM) also recruits students from Mashhad, Shiraz, Yazd, Kerman, Shahed and Tehran universities and it has launched a PhD. Program in Traditional Pharmacy.

The Dean of the School also mentioned the rewriting and publishing and republishing of traditional medicine books. He added that the books are translated into the new language of the contemporary medicine despite being time-consuming and costly. Establishing a research center and some traditional clinics around Tehran and one in TUMS largest hospital, Imam Hospital Complex have been some other activities of the School, Dr. Shams-ardekani said. He also talked about the establishment of a life modification clinic which some professors and some “Hakims”, a term used to describe medical doctors who were philosophers and polymath scientists centuries ago, like other countries such as Pakistan, India and China which benefit from the work of both scholars and Hakims.

Expressing his pleasure for attending the School, Dr. Gezairy said he had visited Chinese medicine, where they have been employing traditional medicine as well as acupuncture and low voltage electricity in their practice in the same hospital that modern medicine was offered.

He later wished to raise some question from the health point of view to be regarded for future research. He said sometimes the patients went to physicians in hospital and then decide to take traditional medicine or vice-versa which could end in noticeable cost, therefore research must be done to determine which practice was more beneficial for certain diseases. Or some herbs have some active ingredients which are used for some symptoms and there are some other herbs with nearly the same effects, then one should know which one to take. Therefore, comparative clinical trials should be undertaken to provide the . best options and even practices. Therefore standardization of practice was to be considered, he added.

Encouraging establishment of links between countries possessing traditional medicine, Dr. Gezairy said in Kuwait they had established traditional medicine that was used only for some and not all diseases, such as hypertension, asthma and some skin disease with good results.

He finally said “I would like to congratulate you for starting the program, especially for the [revival] of the history of medicine as we all have to know about our history”. He then said if the Greek science and history had not been translated to Arabic it would have been forgotten now.

Dr. Goushehgir, the vice-dean for Research, expressed his pleasure for hosting Dr. Gezairy and welcomed the suggestion for cooperation with other countries regarding practice and teaching of traditional medicine. He then disclosed the plan for holding a traditional medicine congress for physicians in the region.

Finally, Dr. Gezairy visited the clinic of the School and talked to some patients and a some of the practicing physician who have already completed medicine and now they have pursued traditional medicine too.
